In 2006, architect Florian Kirfel took over the three-winged Bedheim Castle from his family. Together with his wife Anika Gründer, he runs the architectural practice STUDIO GRÜNDER KIRFEL within the castle and gradually oversees the careful preservation of the historic complex. Their guiding principle: the long-term conservation of the castle and responsibility towards future generations.
Experience heritage preservation – our video shows how solid wood floorboards make a difference.
Florian Kirfel draws on his extensive experience in the restoration of listed buildings when refurbishing the estate. Combined with a deep engagement with traditional construction methods and his teaching position at the University of Weimar, this approach reflects a philosophy that unites meticulous planning, patience, and respect for history. The goal is to restore spaces thoughtfully, to connect old and new, and to preserve the unique atmosphere of the house.
The choice of flooring follows the same principle: for the former dining room, now an exhibition space, the owners deliberately selected solid HIRAM Habitat castle floorboards made from Black Forest Douglas fir—a material that has been used in historic buildings for centuries and which Florian Kirfel encountered during visits to Danish castles. The 28 mm thick, 300 mm wide boards create long, natural surfaces that are both authentic and impressive. A decorative border and boards up to 12 meters in length give the room additional character and recall the craftsmanship traditions of past centuries.
Today, Bedheim Castle serves a variety of public functions: cultural events, exhibition spaces, a café, and the social use of the castle gardens make the project a vibrant destination. This use not only ensures public appreciation but also enables preservation at the highest standard—sustainable, careful, and future-oriented.
"The true value of the floorboards really emerges over time through installation and care. The development of wear marks and patina is, in my view, actually crucial for a building like this. And such wear and patina can only develop on materials that are durable enough to withstand it."
