How can a centuries-old timber-framed house be carefully updated without losing its soul? This renovation project shows how sustainable building in existing structures can succeed—with natural materials, regional wood, and a clear commitment to preserving what already exists.
At the heart of the project are room-length solid Douglas fir planks with an impressive 300 mm width. Sourced from the nearby Black Forest, this local wood blends naturally into the historic architecture. The wide, continuous floorboards complement the exposed timber beams and original stone walls, creating a harmonious dialogue between old and new. Their unusual dimensions lend the rooms a generous and calm appearance—bringing visual depth, subtle rhythm, and a distinct sense of quality to the interior.
The design language continues in the interior: minimalistic, honest, and close to nature. Soft tones, natural linen fabrics, selected vintage pieces, and custom wood elements reinforce the building’s character and create a living space that feels grounded, timeless, and inviting.
This project stands as an example of a shift in architecture: Instead of demolition and new construction, we preserve and reimagine. Through sustainable renovation, regional materials, and thoughtful design, this historic home has become a space that embraces both heritage and future.
